Cynognathus

A large cynodontian predator from the Middle Triassic.

Cynognathus is an extinct genus of large cynodontian therapsids from the Middle Triassic. Only one species is recognized: *Cynognathus crateronotus*. This predator was closely related to mammals and lived across the southern hemisphere, with fossils found in South Africa, Argentina, Antarctica, and Namibia.

A heavily built animal, *Cynognathus* measured about 1.2 meters from snout to vent and up to 2 meters in total length. Its weight has been estimated at 100–110 kilograms, possibly reaching 150 kilograms. Its head was especially large—up to 40 centimeters long—with wide jaws and sharp teeth. The hindlimbs were positioned directly beneath the body, but the posture of the forelimbs has been debated: some argue they were upright, others that they sprawled out like a reptile. Recent studies suggest cynodonts typically held their front legs in a posture between these extremes. Research on living mammals indicates that "upright posture" is a myth based on fast-running species like dogs and hares; many modern mammals that are not specialized runners keep their forelimbs in a semi-sprawled position. Possible unique features of *C. crateronotus* include an extremely elongated postorbital bar and sectorial postcanine teeth with two serrated cusps behind a recurved tip.

The genus was named in 1894 by British paleontologist Harry Govier Seeley, who had visited southern Africa in 1888–1889. Near Lady Frere, at a site where Alfred Brown had earlier found a tooth, Seeley excavated a skull and partial postcranial skeleton. He named the type species *Cynognathus crateronotus*, along with three others: *C. berryi* (honoring assistant James Berry), *C. platyceps* ("flat jaw"), and *C. leptorhinus* ("slender nose"). The name *Cynognathus* comes from Ancient Greek for "dog jaw." Seeley published a fuller description in 1895. Many fossil specimens probably belonging to this genus have been given different names over time, including *Cynidiognathus*, *Cynogomphius*, *Karoomys*, *Lycaenognathus*, *Lycochampsa*, and *Lycognathus*.
