Baculites
Straight-shelled ammonite that outlasted the K-Pg extinction.
Baculites is an extinct genus of heteromorph ammonite cephalopods, distinguished by its nearly straight shell. It lived across the globe for most of the Late Cretaceous and even briefly outlasted the K-Pg mass extinction. The genus was named by Lamarck in 1799.
The adult shell is generally straight, sometimes smooth and sometimes marked with sinuous ribs or striae that slant forward toward the front. The opening of the shell (the aperture) also slopes forward and has a wavy edge. The underside (venter) is narrow to sharply rounded, while the back (dorsum) is broader. The juvenile shell, found at the tip, is coiled in one or two tiny whorls about 1 centimeter across. Adult sizes range from roughly 7 centimeters (in *Baculites larsoni*) up to 2 meters long. Like other ammonites, the shell was divided into chambers connected by a narrow tube called the siphuncle, which allowed the animal to control buoyancy much like a modern nautilus. The chamber walls are called septa, and the line where each septum meets the outer shell is the suture. True ammonites like *Baculites* have complex, folded suture patterns that help identify different species. A notable feature is that males may have been only a third to half the size of females and may have had much lighter ribbing on the shell.
The shell’s slanted striations, similarly slanted aperture, and narrow, keel-like venter suggest that *Baculites* held a horizontal orientation in adult life. This same cross-section shape appears in much older Ordovician nautiloids like *Bassleroceras* and *Clitendoceras*, which are known to have been horizontal. However, some researchers have argued that *Baculites* lived vertically, with its head hanging straight down, because it lacked a counterweight at the tip and could only move in that direction. More recent work, especially by Gerd Westermann, has reaffirmed that at least some species lived more or less horizontally.
Isotope studies of the shell indicate that *Baculites* inhabited the middle part of the water column, neither near the surface nor the seafloor. In some rock deposits they are common and are thought to have lived in large shoals, though they never accumulated densely enough to form rock layers, as some other straight-shelled cephalopods (like orthocerid nautiloids) did.
