Llanocetus

Ancient toothed whale that grew huge without baleen.

Llanocetus is a genus of extinct toothed baleen whales from the Late Eocene of Antarctica and New Zealand. The type species, Llanocetus denticrenatus, reached gigantic proportions, with a juvenile specimen estimated at 8 m (26 ft) in length and an unnamed species possibly reaching up to 12 m (39 ft). It is significant as the second-oldest-known baleen whale, after Mystacodon, and provides evidence that gigantism evolved multiple times in baleen whales, as it completely lacked baleen and was likely a suction feeder.

Llanocetus was described in 1989 by paleontologist Edward Mitchell based on a partial mandible with two teeth (specimen USNM 183022) and an endocast of the braincase from the La Meseta Formation of Seymour Island, Antarctica. These fossils were excavated in 1974–75 by a joint team from the Instituto Antártico Argentino, Ohio State University and Northern Illinois University. The complete skull belonging to the holotype was described in 2018 by paleontologists Robert Ewan Fordyce and Felix Marx, having been excavated in the 1980s and shipped to New Zealand for preparation. In 2026 the skull was transferred to the Smithsonian, reuniting the holotype material. Mitchell originally thought the specimen was an adult based on bone size and density, but Fordyce and Marx concluded it was a juvenile due to the loss of both epiphyses on the single preserved neck vertebra.

Llanocetus is a key fossil for understanding the early evolution of baleen whales. Its large size—comparable to a modern minke whale—challenges the long-held assumption that gigantism in baleen whales was linked to the evolution of baleen and bulk feeding. Instead, Llanocetus shows that gigantism arose at least once in a toothed, suction-feeding ancestor. The presence of palatal sulci within its tooth sockets, rather than between them, indicates that such sulci are not always evidence of baleen, and may instead relate to large gums that later facilitated baleen evolution. Its teeth, with thick enamel and shearing wear, suggest a raptorial or combined suction-and-bite feeding style. The La Meseta Formation environment was a cool-water lagoon with diverse sharks and giant penguins, and fragmentary remains from New Zealand hint at a wider geographic range than Antarctica alone.
