Impidens
Large omnivorous cynodont from the Triassic of Gondwana.
Impidens is an extinct genus of large, omnivorous cynodont known from the Triassic of South Africa and Antarctica. The only recognized species is *Impidens hancoxi*. This animal lived in high-latitude parts of southern Gondwana during the Middle Triassic and was likely the top predator in its ecosystem.
A fossil from Antarctica was collected in 1986 and initially described in 1995 as an uncertain diademodontid, possibly belonging to *Titanogomphodon*. The holotype of *Impidens hancoxi* was discovered in South Africa in 2014 and formally named as a new species in 2021. At that time, the Antarctic specimen and a less complete South African fossil were also assigned to this species.
With a skull exceeding 400 millimeters (about 16 inches) in length, *Impidens* ranks among the largest non-mammalian cynodonts, though the herbivorous *Scalenodontoides* from the Late Triassic was even bigger.
This genus belongs to the family Trirachodontidae, a group of gomphodont cynodonts. Its closest relatives include the smaller contemporary *Cricodon* and the earlier *Langbergia* and *Trirachodon*. However, the evolutionary relationships within Trirachodontidae remain unclear, and the family may be paraphyletic, meaning some species might be more closely related to traversodontids than to others.
Fossils of *Impidens* come from the *Cricodon-Ufudocyclops* subzone of the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone in South Africa’s Beaufort Group and from the upper Fremouw Formation in Antarctica. The age of these rock layers is debated: they are usually considered Middle Triassic (likely late Anisian or early Ladinian), but a correlated fauna in South America dates to the early Carnian (Late Triassic), while another correlated fauna in China supports an Anisian age.
In its environment, *Impidens* was probably the apex predator. The only other large predator known from the same time and place was the somewhat smaller cynodont *Cynognathus*. Large herbivores in the fauna included the cynodont *Diademodon* and the dicynodont *Ufudocyclops*, along with the smaller trirachodontid *Cricodon*. The *Cricodon-Ufudocyclops* subzone formed in a meandering river system with deep channels and high banks. Both this subzone and the Fremouw Formation represent high-paleolatitude settings, which may account for some differences between their fauna and that of lower-latitude regions.
