Development
Sports Interactive developed Football Manager 2018, with Sega as publisher. Details of new features were announced in late September 2017, with Football Manager Touch additions following in October 2017 through the game's official website and social media. New editions included updated squads and kits, plus match engine improvements. Pre-purchasers through Sega-approved digital retailers could access a fully playable beta version at least two weeks before the official street date, with single-player careers continuing into the full game. A beta screenshot confirmed that computer-generated players could come out as homosexual, resulting in a small news report and a revenue boost.
Reception
Football Manager 2018 for Microsoft Windows and Football Manager 2018 Touch for Nintendo Switch received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. Eurogamer praised the game's day one polish and small iterations from the prior entry. PCGamesN awarded a nine out of ten, noting that the depth remained while the humanity of football was better represented. GamesRadar+ commended improvements to the 3D match engine but criticized the user interface and dynamics system. PC Gamer gave a score of 89/100, calling it the most ambitious installment yet. GameSpot gave a 9/10, highlighting how dynamics broadened user interaction with the team, more detailed injury information, enhanced scouting, and new player animations with increased intelligence in the 3D match engine.
