Development
Following the United Kingdom's vote to leave the European Union on 23 June 2016, the game included a Brexit feature with three possible scenarios: no additional work visas, grandfathered players with new visa requirements, or a hard Brexit where Scotland votes for independence and EU players need visas for English, Welsh, or Northern Irish teams. A new social media view displayed Twitter-themed fan and player reactions, and a face scanning option allowed customizing the player's in-game avatar via webcam or photo.
Reception
On Metacritic, Football Manager 2017 scored 80 out of 100 from 47 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. GameSpot rated it 7/10, praising player development and smart transfers but criticizing the tactics interface. PC Gamer gave 85/100, calling it a significant step up from previous versions. Trusted Reviews awarded 4.5 stars, stating it was a very definite leap forward. George Osborn of The Guardian was less positive, noting a lack of substantial increase over prior installments and criticizing the face scanner and social media as cosmetic and inconsequential. User reviews on Steam were mostly negative, due to a backlash from Chinese users over the absence of an official Chinese translation.
