Background

Grohl has described the sessions as a cathartic way of recovering from Kurt Cobain's suicide, and said he made the record just for fun. He handed out cassette copies to friends under the name "Foo Fighters" to hide his involvement; when record labels took an interest, he signed with Capitol and put together a band to play the songs live. With more traditional rock styling than typical grunge, the album is credited with establishing post-grunge. It was praised by critics, became the band's second-best-selling album in the United States, and reached the top five in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
