Background

Dave Grohl wanted songs whose messages would connect with listeners, and some of his more reflective lyrics drew on the birth of his daughter. Critics mostly praised the album's range and songwriting, though some found it uneven. It topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Austria, produced the singles "The Pretender", "Long Road to Ruin" and "Let It Die", earned five Grammy nominations with a win for Best Rock Album, and won the Brit Award for Best International Album.
