The Colour and the Shape

The 1997 album that first captured Foo Fighters as a full band.

The Colour and the Shape is the second studio album by Foo Fighters, released on May 20, 1997, by Roswell and Capitol Records. It was the first album the Foo Fighters recorded as a full band, after Dave Grohl had made the debut on his own, and it is widely seen as a defining post-grunge record.

Background

After the debut's success, Grohl recruited guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, and brought in Gil Norton as producer. Much of the writing grew out of Grohl's 1996 divorce from photographer Jennifer Youngblood, and the track list was arranged to resemble a therapy session, moving between fast songs and ballads. The first sessions at Bear Creek Studio in Washington went badly and most of that material was dropped; the band started again without Goldsmith in early 1997 at Grandmaster Recordings in Hollywood. The album was among the best-selling rock records of 1997 and 1998, its three singles became US rock-radio staples, and it was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 40th Grammy Awards.
