Rules
Each of the 24 existing NHL teams could protect one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards. First-year and second-year pros on the reserve list were exempt. Forty-eight players were selected, two per franchise. Only one goaltender or one defenseman could be taken from each team. Consequently, six teams lost a goaltender and a forward, sixteen lost a defenseman and a forward, and two lost two forwards. The Panthers and Mighty Ducks each drafted three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards.
Phase II
The 1993 NHL expansion draft included a second phase on June 25. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, and San Jose Sharks, who had joined the league in the two prior seasons, each selected two players from the Florida Panthers and Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Those two new teams could protect one goaltender, five defensemen, and ten forwards. As a result, the Panthers and Mighty Ducks each lost one goaltender, one defenseman, and one forward. That same day, the Lightning traded Glenn Healy to the New York Rangers for a third-round pick in the 1993 entry draft.
