The 2024 and 2025 Stanley Cup championships defined Barkov's captaincy. After years of early playoff exits, including first-round losses in back-to-back seasons, Barkov led the Panthers past the first round for the first time since 1996. The team then captured consecutive Stanley Cup titles. Barkov became the first Finnish-born captain to win the Cup and the first European to captain multiple Stanley Cup winning teams. His leadership was built on consistency and two-way excellence, earning him the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2021, 2024, and 2025 as the forward who 'demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game.'
