Tkachuk is of Ukrainian and Irish heritage. He was born at the Melrose/Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, Massachusetts as the son of Gerry and John Tkachuk, a Boston firefighter. He played high school hockey at Malden Catholic High School. He earned a scholarship to Boston University, where he notched 40 points in one season. He was drafted 19th overall by Winnipeg in 1990. He made his NHL debut on February 28, 1992. He recorded consecutive 50-goal seasons, leading the NHL in goals in one season, becoming the first American to do so. He scored his 500th goal in 2008 and later his 1,000th point. He retired in 2010. He is one of three players to have recorded both 500 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in NHL history. He represented the United States, winning the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and a silver medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, and into the Coyotes Ring of Honor and the Blues Hall of Fame. He is set to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2026.

Tkachuk played as a center, left winger and right winger in his career. He earned the nickname 'Walt' (given by Eddie Olczyk), possibly in reference to Walter Tkaczuk. St. Louis Blues broadcasters and fans dubbed him 'Big Walt.' He was team captain for the Jets and later the Coyotes. He signed a five-year offer sheet with the Chicago Blackhawks, but the Jets matched it. He was stripped of the captaincy due to the contract dispute. He led the NHL in goals with 52 in the 1996–97 season, also recording 228 penalty minutes, becoming the first player to lead the league in scoring and have over 200 penalty minutes.
