Rules
Each of the 24 existing NHL teams could protect one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards. First-year and second-year pros on reserve lists were exempt. Forty-eight players were selected, two per franchise. From each franchise, only one goaltender or one defenseman could be taken. Consequently, six teams lost a goaltender and a forward, sixteen lost a defenseman and a forward, and two lost two forwards. The Panthers and Mighty Ducks each drafted three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards.
Phase II
The 1993 NHL expansion draft had a second part on June 25. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, and San Jose Sharks each picked two players from the Florida Panthers and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The Panthers and Mighty Ducks could shield one goalie, five defensemen, and ten forwards. Each of those two teams lost one goalie, one defenseman, and one forward. That same day, the Lightning sent Glenn Healy to the New York Rangers for a third-round pick in the 1993 entry draft.
