Claude Giroux

Longest-tenured captain in Philadelphia Flyers history.

Last updated

Claude Giroux is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward and alternate captain for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Florida Panthers, and was selected by the Flyers 22nd overall in the 2006 NHL entry draft. Giroux was named the Flyers' team captain in 2013 and became the longest-tenured captain in team history.

Lore & Background

Giroux played his major junior career with the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he helped the team win the 2008 President's Cup and earned the Guy Lafleur Trophy as playoff MVP. Internationally, he won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

He made his NHL debut with the Flyers in February 2008 and joined the roster full-time midway through the 2008–09 season. After the trades of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in 2011, Giroux took over as the club's first-line centre and was the team's top point-scorer for seven seasons. He finished third in the league in point scoring in 2012 and 2014, and second in 2018 with 102 points, behind only Connor McDavid.

Reader's Guide

Giroux's significance lies in his consistent offensive production and leadership over a long career. He was the Flyers' top point-scorer for seven seasons and finished among the league's top three in points multiple times. His 102-point season in 2018 placed him second in the NHL. As team captain from 2013, he became the longest-tenured captain in Flyers history, playing his 1,000th game with the franchise on March 17, 2022.

Known for his flexibility as a forward, Giroux played comfortably at both centre and wing. His playoff performances include a 21-point run in 2010 that helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final, where he scored the overtime game-winning goal in game three. He also played for the Florida Panthers before joining the Ottawa Senators as an alternate captain.
