Mike Hoffman (ice hockey, born 1989)

Canadian winger, fifth-round pick, led Ottawa in goals as rookie.

Last updated

Mike Hoffman, a Canadian professional ice hockey winger born November 24, 1989, is currently without a team, having most recently suited up for the San Jose Sharks in the NHL. The Ottawa Senators picked him in the fifth round, 130th overall, during the 2009 draft, and he has also spent time with the Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, and St. Louis Blues.

Junior

Hoffman’s junior career began in 2006–07 with the Kitchener Dutchmen of the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League, where he earned a rookie of the year nomination. Late that season, the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL called him up for two regular-season games and four playoff contests, but he failed to score. When he couldn’t make the Rangers’ roster the following year, no OHL team claimed him, so he moved to the QMJHL. He first joined the Gatineau Olympiques but was released after 19 games, posting five goals and seven assists.

Olympiques GM Charlie Henry later noted that Hoffman was a good player but didn’t work as hard then as he would later. The last-place Drummondville Voltigeurs picked him up, and he finished that season with 24 goals in 62 games. Undrafted in 2008, he attended the Philadelphia Flyers’ training camp on an amateur tryout but was released on September 29.

Returning to Drummondville for 2008–09, Hoffman broke out with 52 goals in 62 games, helping the team go from last place to winning the QMJHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth. In Game 7 of the finals, he scored a goal and an assist in a 3–2 win over Shawinigan, finishing the playoffs with 21 goals in 19 games. The Senators then selected him 130th overall in the 2009 draft; had he gone unselected, they could have signed him as a free agent, but 14 other teams showed interest, forcing Ottawa to pick him. After attending Senators camps and a preseason game, he was sent back to the QMJHL.

For his over-age 2009–10 season, Hoffman was traded to the Saint John Sea Dogs for a second-round pick. He recorded 85 points (46 goals, 39 assists) in 56 games, breaking Scott Howes’ single-season goal record for the Sea Dogs. His goal total ranked third in the QMJHL, he tied for second in power-play goals (17), and he placed seventh in overall scoring. He earned a First Team All-Star nod, the league’s MVP trophy, the Sportsman of the Year award, and was a finalist for the CHL Player of the Year.

Lore & Background

Hoffman began his junior career with the Kitchener Dutchmen of the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League in 2006–07, earning a rookie of the year nomination. He joined the Gatineau Olympiques but was released after 19 games, recording five goals and seven assists.

The Drummondville Voltigeurs picked him up, and he finished the season with 24 goals in 62 games. He was not selected in the 2008 NHL entry draft but attended the Philadelphia Flyers' training camp on an amateur tryout. In the 2008–09 season, he scored 52 goals in 62 games with Drummondville, helping the team win the QMJHL championship and earn a berth in the 2009 Memorial Cup.

He was then selected by the Ottawa Senators 130th overall in the 2009 NHL entry draft. He played his over-age season for the Saint John Sea Dogs, recording 85 points (46 goals, 39 assists) in 56 games, breaking the team's single-season goal record. He made his NHL debut on December 23, 2011, in a 2–1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. After several recalls and assignments, he scored his first NHL goal on March 8, 2014, in a 5–3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. In the 2014–15 season, he played the whole season in Ottawa, leading the team with 27 goals and finishing sixth in Calder Trophy voting.
