Lore & Background

Dusk takes place in and around the fictitious rural town of Dusk, Pennsylvania, where a network of Lovecraftian ruins discovered beneath farmland attracts government attention. Military and scientific personnel establish research labs and factories to harness the ruins' magic, but demonic possessions and industrial disasters force the remnants of the team out. A perimeter wall seals the town. The player controls a nameless treasure hunter, known as the Dusk Dude or The Intruder, who is captured and impaled on a meathook. The first episode, The Foothills, follows the protagonist's escape through rural environments including swamps, barnyards, cornfields, and sawmills, culminating in breaching the perimeter wall and discovering an underground passage to an industrial zone. The second episode, The Facilities, involves fighting possessed military and science personnel guarding occult machines that extract power from minced human remains. The protagonist activates an otherworldly portal. The third episode, The Nameless City, takes place in a nightmarish dimension where the protagonist confronts the cult leader Jakob, who is killed by his followers. The protagonist then battles the Outer God Nyarlathotep, who deems him worthy, gives him power, and places him in stasis until needed again.

Reader's Guide

Dusk was developed by David Szymanski, who conceived the earliest concepts in the mid-2000s while playing older first-person shooters like Half-Life and Doom on low-end hardware. Development began in 2015 in the Unity engine, with Szymanski modeling a low-polygon shotgun to emulate Quake's visual style. The rural farmhouse setting of Episode 1 was inspired by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Redneck Rampage, and Szymanski's experiences in rural Pennsylvania. Episode 2's abandoned factories drew from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Level design took cues from John Romero's work on Doom and Quake, emphasizing non-linearity and abstract geometry. The game's visuals deliberately use low-resolution textures, limited palettes, and low polygon counts. Szymanski noted difficulty in preventing Unity from introducing visual improvements. The game was released in early access on January 11, 2018, with the first two episodes and multiplayer. Full release occurred on December 10, 2018, the 25th anniversary of Doom. Console ports followed: Nintendo Switch on October 28, 2021; PlayStation 4 on October 31, 2023; Xbox Series X/S on October 31, 2025. Mod support and an HD version with updated textures were released in December 2023. A prequel, Dusk '82 ULTIMATE EDITION, a 2D action/puzzler similar to Chip's Challenge, was released on October 22, 2021. A spin-off, Dungeons of Dusk, a turn-based dungeon crawler RPG set between episodes, was announced in December 2025 for a 2026 release.
