Borderlands 3 is a 2019 action role-playing first-person shooter from Gearbox Software and 2K. It follows 2012's Borderlands 2 and is the fourth main series installment. It launched on September 13, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, with a macOS version arriving on October 30, 2019. A Stadia port came on December 17, 2019. Free upgrades for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 owners of the prior console versions were released on November 10 and 12, 2020, respectively. A Nintendo Switch version dropped on October 6, 2023. The game received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising its gameplay but noting a lack of innovation, technical problems, and weak writing. It sold over five million copies in its first five days, the fastest start in the series. A sequel, Borderlands 4, came out on September 12, 2025.

Players take on quests and side missions alone or with up to three others, choosing from four character classes. Defeated enemies can drop weapons and gear to equip. New abilities unlock as players gain experience. The story follows four new Vault Hunters hired by Pandora's Crimson Raiders to stop twins Troy and Tyreen Calypso and their cult from seizing the power of alien Vaults scattered across the galaxy.

Gameplay is built around first-person loot shooting. Players can play solo or in parties of up to four, picking one of four classes to complete missions from NPCs or bounty boards for experience, money, and items. Enemies also drop loot. Leveling up grants skill points to spend on a skill tree. The four new characters are Amara, a Siren who summons ethereal fists; Moze, a Gunner who pilots the mecha Iron Bear; Zane, an Operative with various gadgets; and FL4K, a robot Beastmaster who summons creatures. Unlike earlier games where each character had one unique skill on cooldown, here each can unlock three unique skills, though only one (or two for Zane) can be equipped at a time, allowing more build variety.

The core loop remains familiar: take missions, defeat enemies, collect loot from foes or chests. Weapons are procedurally generated, varying in damage, range, ammo capacity, and perks, giving the game "over one billion guns." Perks include elemental effects like fire, ice, or electricity, or alternative firing modes and visual differences.

Lore & Background

Borderlands 3 takes place seven years after the events of Borderlands 2 and Tales from the Borderlands. The story follows four new Vault Hunters—Amara, Moze, Zane, and FL4K—recruited by the Crimson Raiders on Pandora to stop twins Troy and Tyreen Calypso and their cult, the Children of the Vault, from harnessing the power of alien Vaults across the galaxy. The game features five different worlds, starting on Pandora, with the player gaining access to the spacecraft Sanctuary III as a central hub. Returning characters from previous games include Lilith, Claptrap, Zer0, Maya, Brick, Mordecai, Marcus Kincaid, Tiny Tina, Mad Moxxi, Ellie, Sir Alistair Hammerlock, Patricia Tannis, and Mr. Torgue, while Aurelia appears as a boss.

Reader's Guide

Borderlands 3 retains the core loot-shooter loop of taking on missions, defeating enemies, and obtaining procedurally generated weapons, with over one billion guns possible. New features include three unique skills per character (with only one or two equippable at a time), replacing the single-skill system of earlier games. Slag elemental weapons from Borderlands 2 are replaced with radiation, which damages enemies over time and can spread. Combat maneuvers such as crouch-sliding and wall-mounting are introduced. Loot can be generated on a per-player basis, scaling to each character's level, a series first. Post-game content includes True Vault Hunter Mode, Circles of Slaughter, Proving Grounds, and Mayhem Mode. The game also integrates with Twitch streams, allowing viewers to explore a streamer's inventory and receive items via Shift Codes. Gearbox creative director Paul Sage estimated about 35 hours for the main quest and some side missions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Borderlands 3?

It is a 2019 action RPG loot shooter built by Gearbox Software and released by 2K, acting as the fourth mainline entry in the Borderlands franchise. The story picks up roughly seven years after the events of Borderlands 2, following a new team of Vault Hunters.

What classes and elemental powers does Borderlands 3 offer?

Players pick from five Vault Hunter archetypes—Vladof, Siren, Maag, Amperite, and Zom—each with its own skill tree and signature abilities. Combat revolves around four damage elements (corrosive, cryo, shock, and incendiary) that interact with enemy weaknesses and world objects.

Why is Borderlands 3 considered important in the FPS/loot-shooter space?

It proved the looter-shooter model could still drive massive commercial success a full sequel cycle later, moving more than five million copies in its first five days. It also solidified four-player co-op and a tightly interlinked elemental combat system as genre benchmarks for the late 2010s.

What platforms is Borderlands 3 available on?

The title launched in September 2019 for PS4, Windows, and Xbox One, with macOS and Stadia ports arriving later that same year. Free next-generation upgrades were delivered to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners in November 2020, and a Nintendo Switch edition followed in October 2023.
