First-Person Shooters of the 2000s, Part 1 Codexery

Operation: Matriarchy

A Russian FPS spin-off from the Echelon simulation series.

Operation: Matriarchy

Operation: Matriarchy (released in Russia as Velian) is a 2005 first-person shooter for Windows, developed by MADia Entertainment and published by Buka Entertainment. It is a spin-off from MADia’s simulation series Echelon.

Set in the 24th century, humanity has formed the Federation of Earth and colonized several planets. Around 2350, a mysterious virus strikes the colony world of Velia, affecting only females and turning them into brutal killers. Males are enslaved for food or genetic experiments. The infected women evolve into a hive mind and attack the Federation. The game begins seven years into the war, with the player character, Senior Sergeant Paul Armstrong, defending his ship from the Velians.

Upon release, the game shipped with damaged music files—only the main menu track works; the rest play static—and incomplete sound files, many of which are silent. Fan-made mods later replaced these files and added other improvements. In 2007, an unofficial patch restored a full in-game music score, enhanced sound effects, and rewrote the story. A 2009 fan adaptation added an optional German translation, further sound and music tweaks, and major visual upgrades including improved lighting, textures, and bump maps.

Lore & Background

In the 24th century, mankind has formed the Federation of Earth and colonized several planets. Around 2350, a mysterious virus ravages the colony planet Velia, targeting only females and transforming them into brutal killing machines, while males are enslaved for sustenance or genetic experiments. The Velians evolve into an aggressive hive mind and turn on the Federation, instigating a brutal war. The game begins seven years into the conflict, when Senior Sergeant Paul Armstrong finds himself forced to take on the Velians after they attack his ship.

Reader's Guide

Operation: Matriarchy was released with what appeared to be damaged music files and incomplete sound files; all music except the main menu track plays static, and several sound files are simply silence. This led to a notable community response: a pair of fan-made mods replaced these files and made other enhancements. In 2007, a fan-made music and sound enhancement unofficial patch added a complete in-game music score and enhanced sound effects, and also rewrote the story. In 2009, a fan-made adaptation offered a complete optional translation to German, further changes to sound effects and music, and the largest changes were to the visuals, with enhanced lighting and improved versions of many textures and bump maps. The game's legacy is thus tied to its flawed release and the dedicated fan efforts to repair and expand it.
