Plot

An old artisan in a Middle Eastern town is abused by townspeople because of his hunchback. Children chase him into his shop, and he locks them in, insisting they listen to his story before leaving. In his youth, the old man was called Little Muck. As a boy, Muck is kind despite facing discrimination. After his caring father dies, greedy relatives ransack the house and threaten Muck. He escapes and searches for a merchant who supposedly sells happiness. Crossing the desert, he finds a wicked woman's house and escapes with her magical boots and staff. The boots let him run faster than anyone; the staff finds buried treasure. Muck becomes the Sultan's chief runner but encounters ethical problems. Framed for thievery, he is thrown out. He later returns to help his friend Hassan win Princess Amarza's heart. After finishing his story, the children respect him and help with his work.

Themes

The film presents several morals. Its main antagonists embody greed and senseless violence. The Sultan declares war on a neighboring state because the sun rises earlier there, and he lives in excessive luxury, apathetic to others' misfortunes. Muck's relatives are greedy and disrespectful to his father. In contrast, Muck remains generous and kind throughout: he sympathizes with a runner he displaces, frees a slave girl, and defies the Sultan's war orders. Despite these actions, he remains a social pariah until he shares his story. The social commentary is subtle, and the film stays light-hearted and whimsical.

Filmic techniques and diegesis

The fictional world is whimsical and fanciful. Sets are brightly colored except for a brief dungeon scene. Camera work is mostly at close range, with few panoramas. Background sets are intentionally exaggerated, depicting ideal Middle Eastern towns with sand dunes and lush palaces in an escapist Orient. Costumes and makeup are exaggerated, with German actors portraying Arabs; makeup is obvious, and antagonists' hairstyles and clothes invite light ridicule. Special effects show Muck's speed through fast-forward, his staff hovering, and donkeys' ears growing. Despite production in a totalitarian state, the film contains no obvious propaganda or political messages.
