Development

David Shapiro (Dr. Cat), a former Origin Systems employee, launched DragonSpires in 1994 as one of the Internet's first graphics-based MUDs, focusing on social relationships and community-building rather than combat. The game was free, attracted venture capital interest, and was remade as Furcadia. Furcadia opened to the public on December 16, 1996, developed by Dragon's Eye Productions, Inc and later Catnip Studios, featuring a 256-color VGA palette. It was never intended as an exclusively furry game. The April 6, 2007 Kitterwing Edition added 24-bit non-remappable portraits and Windows Vista support. On December 16, 2006, Furcadia became the first MMORPG to celebrate ten years of continuous service. Original designers and programmers include David Shapiro and 'Manda (Talzhemir in-game). Additional part owners include Emerald Kaiten Catz (Emerald Flame), Aleksi Asikainen (Fox), Ben Jans (Gar), and Michael Vondung (Cironir). The iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch client was released July 19, 2010, but is no longer available. In 2012, a successful Kickstarter campaign raised over $100,000 for The Second Dreaming renovation. In 2016, The Second Dreaming Part 1 added 32-bit worldbuilding tools, character enhancements, a web-based character creator, and graphics engine updates.
