Gray Fullbuster

The ice mage who wields Ice Make and later receives Ice Demon Slayer Magic through his father, driven by loss and the will to protect.

Gray Fullbuster is an ice wizard whose age varies over the course of the series, beginning as a teenager and later reaching adulthood. He is a close ally of Natsu Dragneel, bonded through their shared experiences and contrasting magical elements. Orphaned at age eight when the Etherious Deliora killed his father—his mother having died of illness earlier—he was tutored by Ur in Ice Make magic, which allows him to instantly create ice in any imagined form or weapon.

During his training to withstand cold temperatures, he developed a habit of subconsciously stripping his clothes. He joined Fairy Tail after Ur sacrificed herself by sealing Deliora with Iced Shell, an act that also saved Gray and his fellow student Lyon. Later, Gray received Ice Demon Slayer Magic from his reanimated father, Silver, through a stabbing and absorption, becoming a Demon Slayer to carry out Silver's will to destroy E.N.D. Despite the power's nature, Gray's fight with Natsu upon learning Natsu is E.N.D. was driven by a desire to protect him and fulfill his father's will, not by corruption.

He ultimately used his abilities to assist in destroying Natsu's demon seed, but it was Natsu himself who chose to reject and destroy it, allowing him to remain human by his own choice.

Reader's Guide

Gray Fullbuster serves as a core member of Team Natsu and one of Fairy Tail's most powerful wizards. His primary magic is Ice Make, which allows for the instantaneous creation of ice constructs ranging from simple weapons to complex defensive structures. A unique aspect of his character design is his tendency to strip off his clothes, a habit stemming from his training with Ur to withstand cold temperatures and based on Hiro Mashima's own life. Gray's role evolves significantly when he acquires Ice Demon Slayer Magic from his father, Silver.

This power shifts his classification to Demon Slayer, granting him the ability to combat demons directly but at the cost of potential corruption. This corruption notably manifested when he was compelled to attack Natsu after learning Natsu's true identity as E.N.D. However, Gray demonstrates immense control and loyalty by using these same powers to cure Natsu of his demonic nature.
