Balkan Bloc

Neighbouring countries trading high points - and the debate over why.

Regional bloc voting is the tendency of some groups of neighbouring countries at the Eurovision Song Contest to give one another high points year after year; the Nordic countries are the best-known example. Statistical analysis of the 2001-2005 results suggests such blocs exist, but it is debated how much is down to diaspora voting, a sense of kinship, political ties or simply similar musical tastes in culturally close countries. Countries also commonly reward their neighbours even when they are not part of a bloc.
