Teirm
A wealthy northern port that remained loyal to the Empire until the very end.
Teirm stands as one of the most prosperous cities in Alagaësia, situated along the northern coast of the mainland. Renowned for its bustling docks and wealthy merchant guilds, it serves as a critical hub for trade between the mainland and distant islands. While it was a wealthy and influential trading city under Galbatorix's rule, Teirm was never a neutral stronghold; it was firmly under the Empire's control until the fall of Galbatorix.

Lore & Background
Teirm's history is defined by its commerce. Unlike many cities that fell quickly to King Galbatorix, Teirm's wealth made it a prized possession of the Empire, not an autonomous negotiator. The merchants there understood that a war-torn region meant no profit, so they complied with imperial rule and remained loyal to the Empire throughout the conflict. Contrary to some accounts, Teirm never funneled gold or grain to the Varden—the city was firmly under imperial control and did not secretly finance the resistance. The Varden's stronghold was in the Beor Mountains, not the Spine, and Teirm never became a supply point for them during the later stages of the war. The city remained under the Empire until after Galbatorix's fall, its docks filled with merchant galleys rather than warships, and its streets buzzing with imperial agents rather than rebel spies.
Reader's Guide
Teirm sprawls along a natural bay protected by low cliffs and massive breakwaters constructed from grey stone. The climate is temperate and coastal, avoiding the extreme heat of the central desert while remaining significantly warmer than the northern Spine mountains. The city center rises directly behind the docks, dominated by tall merchant towers where powerful guilds conduct their business away from prying eyes. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through crowded markets selling silk, steel, and exotic goods imported from across the ocean.
Residential districts are packed tightly together, creating a labyrinthine feel that confuses strangers but aids locals in moving unseen. Historically, Teirm represents the economic backbone of southern Alagaësia. Its independence was a rare anomaly in an Empire that demanded total obedience and taxation. The culture prioritizes profit above all else, yet values personal liberty enough to risk war for it when threatened.
During the rebellion, these same streets became transit points for spies and soldiers disguised as traders, turning a commercial hub into a fortress of resistance without changing its outward appearance.
