The Shades
The last riders, bound to a tyrant's will, their black wings the shadow over all of Alagaësia.
The Shades are the last surviving dragon riders in Alagaësia, a small cadre of mounted warriors who serve the tyrant King Galbatorix and his Iron Empire. Once part of the ancient and noble Order of the Dragon Riders, they were the riders who pledged allegiance to the King during the Rider War, and they alone survived the war's devastating end. Now they are instruments of imperial terror—living weapons whose black dragons blot out the sky and whose presence on the ground means no fortress, no village, and no rebel cell is beyond the reach of the throne.
Throughout the Inheritance Cycle, the Shades function as Galbatorix's ultimate enforcement arm and personal guard. They are few in number but unmatched in raw aerial power, and their existence represents the living memory of what the Riders once were, twisted into a tool of oppression. Every major military and political confrontation in the saga is shaped, directly or indirectly, by the question of who controls the dragons—and the Shades answer to one man.

Lore & Background
The Shades are the scarred survivors of the Rider War, the catastrophic conflict that saw the ancient Order of the Dragon Riders fracture and ultimately fall. During that war, a faction of riders chose to ride for the King rather than against him, and when the war ended in the Riders' annihilation, those loyal to the crown were the only ones left with dragons at their sides. What began as a political alignment hardened into a permanent institution: the Shades, a small elite bound to Galbatorix's service, their black dragons the last living dragons in a world that has known no others for generations.
Their power is absolute and terrifying. A Shade on a black dragon is essentially an invincible aerial strike force—no army in Alagaësia can match the speed, fire, and sheer destructive force of a dragon in flight. This makes the Shades the backbone of imperial military doctrine. Galbatorix deploys them as the final, decisive blow in any campaign, and their very existence keeps the conquered peoples in a state of perpetual dread.
The common folk of Alagaësia grow up hearing stories of black shadows crossing the sun, and that fear is as much a tool of control as any garrison. Yet the Shades are also a burden on their master. Their loyalty, while fierce, is not unconditional; they are riders first, and the old Rider code of honor still lingers in their blood. This tension—between the oath to the King and the deeper, older identity as Riders—creates a persistent undercurrent of instability in Galbatorix's court.
He trusts them, but he also watches them, and the Shades know they are both his greatest asset and his most dangerous potential rival. It is a relationship forged in war, sustained by power, and shadowed by the knowledge that the world remembers what Riders were meant to be.
Reader's Guide
The Shades exist to serve as Galbatorix's supreme military and enforcement power. Their purpose is singular: to project the King's will across Alagaësia through unmatched aerial dominance. No ground force, no fortress, no political rival can withstand a Shade in flight, making them the ultimate deterrent and the final instrument of imperial conquest. Leadership flows directly from Galbatorix, who is himself a Shade and the undisputed supreme rider.
The other Shades answer to him alone; there is no council, no chain of command beyond his word. Their primary territory is Urû-Baith, where they are garrisoned and their dragons are kept, but they operate across the entire empire as needed, striking at rebel strongholds, enforcing conscription, and demonstrating the King's reach. Key members include Galbatorix and his dragon Sabre, the most powerful and feared of the pair. A small number of additional Shades serve under him, though they remain largely subordinate and secondary in the narrative.
Their alliance is exclusive: they serve the Iron Empire and answer to no other authority. Their rivalry is with every faction that opposes the King—the Riders' legacy embodied in Eragon and Saphira, the rebel networks, and ultimately the broader resistance. Across the four books, the Shades' role shifts from an omnipresent, almost mythic threat in Eragon to a more tangible, vulnerable military force as the war intensifies. Their numbers dwindle, their invincibility is challenged, and by the series' climax they are diminished remnants of the power they once wielded, their black wings a fading memory rather than an ever-present shadow.
Did You Know?
- Their dragons are black, a distinctive marking that sets them apart visually from the silver-and-gold dragons of the old Rider tradition and reinforces their association with the King's dark rule.
- The Shades' power is inseparable from their dragons—without a dragon, a Shade is merely a skilled rider, and the entire military doctrine of the Iron Empire rests on the existence of these last living dragons.
- The lingering Rider code of honor within the Shades creates a persistent tension with their service to Galbatorix, a fracture that the narrative exploits as a source of both danger and potential change.
