Nasuada
The daughter of a dead king who refuses to let her people kneel.
Nasuada is the political heart of the Alagaësian resistance and one of the most consequential non-Rider characters in the Eragon cycle. Daughter of Hrothgar, the last king of Alagaës before Galbatorix's usurpation, she carries both the weight of a murdered dynasty and an unshakeable belief that her people can be freed. She is not a warrior in the traditional sense, yet her mind, her voice, and her stubborn refusal to accept tyranny make her as pivotal to the story as any dragonrider.

Lore & Background
Nasuada's identity is inseparable from her father's legacy. Hrothgar ruled Alagaës with a hand that was firm but just, and his murder by Galbatorix turned his daughter into a living symbol of what the tyrant destroyed. She carries that symbol not as a badge of grief but as a mandate: to rebuild, to strategize, and to keep the scattered remnants of a free nation from dissolving into despair. In the Varden camp she is not the loudest voice in the war council, but she is the one who listens, cross-examines, and ultimately steers decisions toward long-term survival rather than short-term vengeance.
Reader's Guide
Role in the cycle: Political leader and council member of the Varden. Nasuada is not a Rider, a soldier, or a dwarf; she is the strategic and moral compass of the resistance, and her influence grows with every volume. Across the four books, Nasuada evolves from a grieving daughter of a murdered king into the de facto political architect of a free Alagaës. In Eragon she is introduced as a sharp, composed council member who challenges the men around her.
In Eldest she deepens her involvement in governance and her complicated bond with Murtagh. In Inheritance she plays a crucial part in the final campaign against Galbatorix. In Legacy she emerges as a leader in her own right, shaping the post-war nation. Her key relationships include her father Hrothgar (whose death defines her), Varden (the resistance leader she advises and occasionally challenges), and Murtagh (her romantic partner, whose mind is enslaved by the Black Stalwart for much of the story).
What makes her distinct is that her power is intellectual and moral rather than martial; she wins arguments, not duels, and her legacy is a functioning government rather than a slain enemy. First appearance: Eragon, in the Varden camp chapters. She remains alive and politically central through Legacy.
Did You Know?
- Nasuada is one of the very few characters in the cycle whose primary contribution to the war effort is governance and strategy rather than combat.
- Her relationship with Murtagh is central to the plot because he is under the control of the Black Stalwart, making their bond a test of whether love can persist inside a mind that is not its own.
- Unlike the Riders, Nasuada has no dragon companion; her 'riding' is the long, unglamorous ride of keeping a fractured nation from tearing itself apart.
