Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is a public institution in Shanghai, China, under the Ministry of Education. It belongs to Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class Construction, and is a member of the C9 League. The university began as Nanyang Public School in 1896, one of China’s earliest universities. Founder Sheng Xuanhuai, backed by the Guangxu Emperor, aimed to reduce the influence of the imperial exams and introduce a Western, practical education model.
The school initially focused on business and political science to support national development. Over the next few decades, it underwent several name changes and administrative shifts—becoming a high industrial school under the Ministry of Commerce in 1905, then under the Ministry of Posts and Communications in 1907, and later the Shanghai Special Industrial School under the Ministry of Communications after the Republic of China was established in 1912. Under President Tang Wenzhi (1907–1920), the curriculum was restructured along Western engineering lines. Programs in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering expanded, and a four-year traffic management program was introduced, along with courses in industrial economics and factory management.
General education was replaced by specialized coursework, with emphasis on experiments and practical work. From 1908 to 1920, about half the faculty in technical fields were foreign—mostly Americans—who led the civil and electrical engineering departments due to a shortage of qualified local instructors. By the 1920s, many returned Chinese scholars replaced them.
After the People’s Liberation Army took western Shanghai on May 25, 1949, Jiao Tong University gradually resumed classes on June 2. The Shanghai Military Commission assumed control on June 15. That August, Jinan University’s Science College merged into the university. It was merged into Jiao Tong University in 1921, before gaining its current name in 1959.
Lore & Background
SJTU was founded as Nanyang Public School in 1896. The university currently has 33 schools, 12 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises. During a May 24–25, 1955 meeting, Jiao Tong University's committee decided to follow central government instructions to relocate the university.
The relocation began in earnest by 1957, with the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee agreeing to the move on June 22. However, just a week later, the university decided to operate campuses in both Shanghai and Xi'an, with only select departments relocating. In September, many Civil Engineering faculty and students transferred to the Xi'an campus, which was formally separated into Xi'an Jiaotong University on July 31, 1959, with the Shanghai campus renamed Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Origins in the Westernization Movement (1896–1920)
The Guangxu Emperor approved the proposal in December of that year, and Sheng assumed the presidency. As a proponent of the Westernization Movement, Sheng envisioned an institution that would dilute the dominance of the imperial examination system and introduce a Western academic framework with a practical bent. The school initially concentrated on business and political sciences, aligning with the Self-Strengthening Movement's goals. Notably, American instructors made up roughly half the specialized faculty until returning Chinese student-educators gradually took over in the 1920s.
The Xi'an Relocation and the Birth of Two Universities (1955–1959)
Yet just one week later, the university pivoted to a dual-campus model, sending only select departments westward. The arrangement proved temporary: on July 31, 1959, the Xi'an campus was formally severed as Xi'an Jiaotong University, while the Shanghai campus received its current name—Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This split, born of political directive rather than academic choice, permanently reshaped the institutional landscape of Chinese higher education and defined the identity of both successor institutions.
Institutional Scale and Elite Standing in Modern China
It also holds membership in the C9 League, a consortium of China's most prestigious universities. The university's physical and organizational footprint is substantial—encompassing 33 schools, 12 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises.

After a planned relocation to Xi'an in the 1950s, the university split into two separate institutions on July 31, 1959: Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University (later renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong University).
