They were established in 1972 as a founding franchise of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979. The Oilers were originally named the Alberta Oilers after the Calgary Broncos folded before the WHA's first season, then returned to the Edmonton Oilers name for 1973–74. They won the first game in WHA history 7–4 over the Ottawa Nationals. In 1978, the team acquired underage player Wayne Gretzky from the Indianapolis Racers. The Oilers finished first in the WHA in 1978–79 but lost the Avco World Trophy Final to the Winnipeg Jets. After joining the NHL in 1979, the Oilers were placed in the Smythe Division. They made the playoffs in their first 13 NHL seasons. In 1983, they advanced to the Stanley Cup Final but were swept by the New York Islanders.
