They are the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants and play at CarMax Park.[1]
Life and work
Brad Mead of Prince George, Virginia, submitted the winning name.[2] It depicts a black, red, and grey flying squirrel shaped like the outline of Virginia.[3] In 2021, the Flying Squirrels were organized into the Double-A Northeast as part of MLB's restructuring.[4] In 2022, that league reverted to the name Eastern League.[4]
In 2009, the team left Norwich, Connecticut—where it had been called the Connecticut Defenders—and relocated to Richmond, playing at The Diamond.[2] A contest run by the Richmond Times-Dispatch for readers to name the team concluded on October 15, 2009, resulting in the selection "Richmond Flying Squirrels."[2] On December 1, 2009, the team's logo was revealed; it was created by Brandiose, a sports branding company based in San Diego.[3][5]
What the cited sources add
The same source describes the logo as a sleek, modern superhero rather than a cartoon.[6] The Flying Squirrels' logowear was a top seller in Minor League Baseball.[6] Todd "Parney" Parnell stated that the logo connected with the community and impacted it positively.[6] Jason Klein of Plan B. Branding said the look represents the organization's "nutty" brand of fun.[6]
