History
Monte Cook left Wizards of the Coast in April 2001 and founded Malhavoc Press as a d20 System imprint the following month. In July 2001 he signed with White Wolf's Sword & Sorcery Studios, then the largest independent publisher of d20 material, to handle publishing while he focused on design and writing. The company's first product, The Book of Eldritch Might (2001), was the first commercial book published exclusively as a PDF by a print publisher; its immediate success demonstrated the viability of PDF publishing in the role-playing industry. Early Malhavoc products were initially released only in electronic format through the Malhavoc site, with print versions later issued by Sword & Sorcery. In August 2008 Monte Cook announced that he had originally left Wizards of the Coast to write fiction and was putting Malhavoc Press and game work on the back-burner, though he did not close the press. That same month, Sword & Sorcery Studios was sold by White Wolf.
