Features
All program data and character data are stored in plain text files, and custom rules can be added by writing new data files. PCGen includes a Data Set Converter that assists in converting user-created data sets to the latest version, but only for data sets compatible with PCGen version 5.14.1 or later. Character sheets can be exported in XML, HTML, and PDF formats, including a datablock format similar to pre-built adventures and a character sheet format resembling official D&D sheets.
Licensing of data
PCGen operates under the OGL, which lets it include material from the System Reference Document and related content. It also follows Paizo’s Community Use Policy and Pathfinder Compatibility License. Other publishers have allowed their non-OGL content to be converted into PCGen data sets through separate deals. License issues have arisen; Wizards of the Coast initially blocked some source book data from shipping with PCGen, then allowed Code Monkey Publishing to sell commercial versions.
