Fremen Jihad
A holy war that turned a desert people into galactic conquerors, burning the stars in the name of Muad'Dib.
In Dune Messiah, the narrative shifts from the liberation of Arrakis to the terrifying reality of a religion born around Paul Atreides. What began as a struggle for survival against the Harkonnens and Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV evolved into a galaxy-spanning jihad fought in Muad'Dib's name. This religious fervor, fueled by Fremen interpretations of prophecy, transformed the desert warriors into an unstoppable force of conquest.

Background
Following Paul's rise as leader among the Fremen, he utilized their fighting abilities and the Bene Gesserit weirding way to retake Arrakis from the Harkonnens. However, victory did not bring peace; instead, a religion arose around him, sparking a jihad across the universe in his name. Korba, originally one of the Fedaykin death commandos, ascended to become a chief priest of this new faith. Not all Fremen supported this expansion; Farok, another Fedaykin, grew disillusioned with how Paul's regime altered their culture and joined a conspiracy initiated by the Spacing Guild, Tleilaxu, and Bene Gesserit to unseat him. The conflict was so pervasive that it required the death of Chani, who died giving birth to Paul's twin heirs, Leto II and Ghanima. Ultimately, blinded by his own prescience and unable to stop the bloodshed, Paul followed Fremen tradition and walked into the desert to die.
Origins
Frank Herbert's inspiration for Dune came from researching a U.S. Department of Agriculture project that used poverty grasses to stabilize the Oregon Dunes. He observed that moving dunes could engulf entire cities, lakes, rivers, and highways. Herbert emphasized the need to study the Kalahari's San people and their water conservation methods, as well as how environment and people shape each other. Fremen culture draws partly from the Bedouin and San. In an early outline called Spice Planet, the Fremen were convicts called "Free Men" transported to Duneworld to work for the Hoskanners' spice operation in exchange for reduced sentences.
Characteristics
Fremen live in communities called sietches, each led by a naib who gains leadership by defeating a predecessor in combat. Justice relies on trial by combat, with duels to the death over matters of etiquette, law, or honor. The victor becomes responsible for the defeated's wife, children, and possessions. Fremen pay spice bribes to the Spacing Guild to keep Arrakis free of spy satellites and plan to terraform the planet. Each sietch has a Sayyadina, a wise woman trained in spiritual traditions. The Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva introduced myths and prophecies among the Fremen, including a messiah legend used by Paul. Fremen worship sandworms as Shai'Hulud, cross the desert in nonrhythmic patterns to avoid attracting worms, and ride them by calling and mounting. Their spice-rich diet turns their eyes blue-in-blue, called the Eyes of Ibad.
