Diving at the 2020 Summer Olympics

The diving program at the 2020 Summer Olympics, held in 2021 after a pandemic-related postponement, consisted of eight medal events. It was one of four aquatic disciplines at the Games, alongside swimming, water polo, and synchronised swimming. The competition included men’s and women’s events for the 3m springboard, synchronized 3m springboard, 10m platform, and synchronized 10m platform.

A maximum of 136 athletes could compete, and all divers were required to be at least 14 years old by December 31, 2020. China topped the medal table for the ninth consecutive Olympics, winning gold in every event except one for the fifth time in that stretch. The sole exception was the men’s synchronized 10m platform, where Great Britain’s Tom Daley and Matty Lee took gold. This marked the second straight Games where Great Britain prevented a Chinese sweep, following Jack Laugher and Chris Mears’s victory in 2016. The United States finished third in the medal table, replicating the top three nations from the Rio Olympics. As in Rio, only China, Great Britain, and the United States won medals in three or more events.

Qualification rules limited each nation to a maximum of 16 divers (eight men and eight women), with up to two entries per individual event and one pair per synchronized event. For individual events, spots went to the top 12 finishers from the 2019 World Championships, the five continental champions, the top 18 from the 2020 FINA Diving World Cup, and additional competitors from that World Cup until the quota was filled. In synchronized events, the top three pairs from the 2019 World Championships, the top four from the 2020 World Cup, and the host nation (Japan) earned spots. Qualifying places were awarded to nations, not individual divers, though a single diver could secure only one spot for their country.
