The *Triceratops* holotype, YPM 1820, was collected in 1888 from Wyoming’s Lance Formation by fossil hunter John Bell Hatcher. Cowboy Edmund B. Wilson spotted a monstrous skull protruding from a ravine and tried to retrieve it by lassoing a horn, which broke off, sending the skull tumbling. He brought the horn to his boss, rancher and fossil collector Charles Arthur Guernsey, who showed it to Hatcher. Marsh then ordered Hatcher to find and salvage the skull. Marsh first named it *Ceratops horridus*, but after further preparation revealed a third nose horn, he gave it the new genus name *Triceratops* (three-horned face) and later added his *Bison alticornis* to the genus. The species name *horridus* comes from Latin for "rough" or "rugose," likely referring to the rough texture of the type specimen, later identified as an aged individual.

Between 1889 and 1891, Hatcher collected another thirty-one *Triceratops* skulls. These varied from the original holotype, which is unsurprising given that the skulls are large three-dimensional objects from individuals of different ages and sexes, subjected to varying pressures during fossilization.
