Allosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived 155 to 143 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. The first fossil remains that could definitively be ascribed to this genus were described in 1877 by Othniel C. Marsh. The name 'Allosaurus' means 'different lizard,' alluding to its lightweight vertebrae, which Marsh believed were unique. The genus has a very complicated taxonomy and includes at least three valid species, the best known of which is A. fragilis. The bulk of Allosaurus remains come from North America's Morrison Formation, with material also known from the Alcobaça, Bombarral, and Lourinhã formations in Portugal. It was known for over half of the 20th century as Antrodemus, but a study of the abundant remains from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry returned the name 'Allosaurus' to prominence. Allosaurus was discovered during the Bone Wars. The first described fossil in its taxonomic history was a bone obtained secondhand by Ferdinand V. Hayden in 1869, which Joseph Leidy tentatively assigned to Poekilopleuron as Poicilopleuron valens, later deciding it deserved its own genus, Antrodemus. Allosaurus itself is based on YPM 1930, a small collection of fragmentary bones. Marsh gave these remains the name Allosaurus fragilis in 1877. The bones were uncovered by Benjamin Mudge and Samuel W. Williston in the autumn of 1877 at Felch Quarry in Colorado. In 1883, Marsh hired Marshall P. Felch to continue excavations, which yielded a mostly complete Allosaurus skeleton later selected as the neotype specimen. In 1879, H. F. Hubbell found a specimen in Como Bluff that became AMNH 5753, put on public view in 1908. For over 50 years, the genus was known as Antrodemus following Charles W. Gilmore's 1920 conclusion, until James H. Madsen's study of Cleveland-Lloyd specimens returned the name 'Allosaurus' to prominence. Major excavations at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry between 1960 and 1965 recovered thousands of bones, with at least 46 individuals of A. fragilis. 'Big Al' (MOR 693) was discovered in 1991 at Howe Ranch, Wyoming, a 95% complete subadult specimen.

He demonstrated that Antrodemus rested on material lacking any reliable diagnostic features and with an unknown geological origin, making it an invalid basis for the genus. Allosaurus thus reclaimed its rightful place in the scientific literature.
