Savathûn

The queen of deception who tricked the Traveler into granting her the Light, using illusions to reshape perception.

Savathûn, known as the Witch Queen, stands as a major antagonist and title character of the 2022 expansion Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Depicted as a god-like leader of the macabre, arthropod-like Hive species, she is thematically defined by deception, manipulation, and hidden schemes. Unlike earlier villains introduced to meet immediate defeat, Savathûn was developed over several years through seasonal storylines and lore entries before becoming a central on-screen figure. In her expansion, she acquires the Light—the power associated with Guardians—and creates the Lucent Brood, Hive warriors who wield similar abilities. Critics have praised her as one of Destiny 2's most successful villains, noting her long-term narrative buildup, ambiguous motives, and role in complicating the series' earlier morality.

Lore & Background

Savathûn was originally known as Sathona, the middle daughter of the Osmium King on the oceanic world Fundament. Her siblings were Xi Ro (later Xivu Arath) and Aurash (later Oryx the Taken King). Expected to become a mother within her short-lived species, she instead fled with her siblings after their father's court was betrayed. They followed the guidance of a Worm familiar, descended into Fundament, and made a pact with the Worm Gods that transformed them into the Hive. Her early backstory is detailed in the "Books of Sorrow," lore entries connected to Destiny: The Taken King. Before becoming a central antagonist in Destiny 2, she was mentioned through series lore. As part of the Season of the Lost in 2021, it was revealed that Savathûn had impersonated Osiris since the Season of the Hunt, using those conversations to communicate story stakes while keeping her motives uncertain.

Reader's Guide

Savathûn serves as the title antagonist of Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, acting as a driving force behind years of fiction. She co-opted the Light to create deathless warriors of her own, changing combat encounters through the Lucent Brood who can be resurrected by Ghosts unless players close the distance to destroy them. Her design is approximately 21 feet tall. The narrative team shifted toward a serialized approach around Season of Arrivals to build a personal relationship with Savathûn across a year before her expansion, allowing players to develop mixed feelings about opposing her.

Bungie chose not to withhold the character after revealing she impersonated Osiris, wanting players to meet her directly. Her design draws on ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, and Sumerian architecture alongside abstract art and cosmic mythology. Critics note that her manipulation continues to affect the story even after her apparent death, shaping events through messages and schemes left behind.
