Creation and development
Nezuko Kamado was designed by manga creator Koyoharu Gotouge specifically to set her brother Tanjiro apart from other protagonists. Because Nezuko is a demon, Tanjiro cannot simply hate the creatures he fights; instead, he sees a moral gray area, believing that demons once had souls and are not inherently evil. Gotouge’s editor and assistants noted that this choice gave the manga a more inventive storyline that hooked readers easily. Anime producer Yuma Takahashi explained that even though Nezuko remains silent from the very first episode, the production team could still show subtle shifts in her facial expressions and make her emotions feel human, adding real depth to her.
Takahashi hoped audiences would look forward to seeing Nezuko grow and express a wide range of feelings. The anime includes an insert song called “Kamado Tanjiro no Uta,” which captures Tanjiro’s resolve to rise from despair and fight to protect his little sister. For most of the series, Nezuko is a demon, yet she is portrayed as attractive and tries to act human. She is kind and selfless, but her life changes completely when she turns into a demon.
Though demons must eat humans to survive, Nezuko believes in sparing human lives. She wears a bamboo muzzle, communicates without words, and behaves like a younger child because of the amnesia common among demons. Her blood turns to fire when it leaves her body, letting her hurt demons while protecting humans. Japanese voice actress Akari Kitō said that Tanjiro’s voice actor Natsuki Hanae acts like a big brother to her at the studio, staying to support her through tough recording sessions even after finishing his own lines.
Hanae also sees Kitō as a younger sister. English dub actress Abby Trott described Nezuko as a sweet, caring sister to her many siblings, even as a demon, since she often helps her brother in fights. Trott found this kindness relatable.
Appearances
Nezuko is born to Tanjuro Kamado and Kie Kamado on a mountain alongside her older brother Tanjiro and the rest of her siblings, serving as the eldest daughter of the Kamado family. Unlike Tanjiro, who sold charcoal in town, Nezuko usually helped around the family home. She is turned into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji during his murder of the Kamado family. She attempts to attack Tanjiro upon his return but comes to her senses to defend him from Giyu Tomioka.
Surprised by her behavior, Giyu sends her to the care of Sakonji Urokodaki, where she falls unconscious for two years while Tanjiro trains to become a demon slayer. After receiving assistance from Tamayo and helping with her research, Nezuko assists Tanjiro in slaying demons during his nighttime missions, surprising and infuriating various demons due to her refusal to consume human flesh. She becomes traveling partners with demon slayers Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira.
Her presence leads to prosecution by Shinobu Kocho, but she is granted clemency on the condition she does not consume human flesh, being sent to the Butterfly Mansion for shelter. Nezuko develops the Blood Demon Art Combustible Blood, which burns demons but does not harm humans; she uses it on the ropes holding the demon slayers after they were put to sleep by Lower Rank Enmu on the Mugen Train, contributing to Enmu's defeat. She awakens to her berserk-like Demon Transformation ability during the fight with Daki at the Entertainment District.
Being unmuzzled and disconnected from her humanity for a prolonged period, Nezuko stumbles upon and attempts to consume a human, but is subdued by Tanjiro and sidelined for the rest of the fight. She proves instrumental in saving several demon slayers from the brink of death by using her Exploding Blood ability to burn the lethal poison of Gyutaro out of their blood. At Swordsmith Village, Nezuko befriends Mitsuri Kanroji and fights Hantengu with her brother.
Before Hantengu's death, she is exposed to sunlight to Tanjiro's horror but develops an immunity to sunlight, which infuriates Muzan. Nezuko returns to Sakonji's residence, where she is administered a drug produced by Tamayo and Shinobu to be turned into a human, falling unconscious in the process. After Tanjiro defeats Muzan on the surface after dawn, she rushes to his location, finally becoming a human and regaining her memories.
Reception
Nezuko Kamado has proven to be a fan-favorite character in the Demon Slayer universe. She secured third place in the first official character popularity poll with 3,319 votes. Her role earned her the Newtype Anime Award for Best Female Character, while her voice actress Akari Kito won Best Voice Actress for the same role. At the 4th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the fight featuring Nezuko and Tanjiro against Rui won Best Fight Scene, and Nezuko was also nominated for Best Girl.
Years later, at the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2024, English voice actress Abby Trott received a nomination for Best Voice Artist Performance for her portrayal of Nezuko, though the award went to Ryan Colt Levy for Denji. Funimation’s Decade of Anime fan poll named Nezuko one of the five Best Girls of the Decade. IGN highlighted her as one of the series’ most popular characters, noting that her design reflects how hypnosis shapes her view of humans as fundamentally good.
Siliconera praised her compelling characterization in the first season, emphasizing how she becomes a heroic figure despite her tragic origins. In 2021, Nezuko graced the cover of Weekly Playboy’s July issue, which included an interview with Kito. That same year, Shueisha lost its appeal to trademark the clothing patterns of three main characters, including Nezuko. This legal outcome sparked a surge of cosplay content online, with fans on TikTok and Instagram dressing as Nezuko and websites offering tutorials.
Pinterest became a hub for graphic designers and illustrators sharing their own fan art. One notable incident involved a cosplayer in China being expelled from an anime event for wearing a kimono, even though she intended to portray Nezuko. Merchandise featuring Nezuko is widespread, including glasses frames, loungewear, canned coffee, model figures, and Tamagotchis. Additionally, from October 6 to 9, 2022, Good Smile Company released Nendoroid Pins of Nezuko exclusively at New York Comic Con.
