Background

Adapted from the first season of the anime and the film Mugen Train, the single-player story mode follows Tanjiro Kamado as he joins the Demon Slayer Corps and fights demons to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human, with light exploration, cutscenes and boss battles. A versus mode pits teams of two fighters against the CPU or other players, locally or online. The game launched with 18 characters, including six from the spin-off Junior High and High School!!! Kimetsu Academy Story, and reached 31 through six free additions and seven paid downloadable characters; the first free DLC in November 2021 added Akaza and Rui, the first playable antagonists, and a 2022 pack added seven Entertainment District Arc characters.

Announced in March 2020 under the Japanese title Kimetsu no Yaiba Hinokami Keppūtan, the game was built by CyberConnect2, known for the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, with key illustrations from the anime studio Ufotable. According to Metacritic it received "mixed or average" reviews for most platforms. The PlayStation 4 version was the bestselling retail game during its first week of release in Japan, with 94,849 physical copies sold. By December 2021 the game had sold over 1.32 million copies worldwide, by February 2024 over 3.5 million, and Sega later reported 4 million; it was nominated for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2021. A sequel, The Hinokami Chronicles 2, was released in August 2025.
