The team began in the 1998–99 season as the Bonaventure Wingstar, winning its division championship and reaching the league final, where it lost 2–5 to the Brampton Thunder. The following season, renamed the Montreal Wingstar, the team finished one point out of first place in its division but was eliminated in the first playoff round by the St-Julie Panthers. In 2000–01, goaltender Manon Rhéaume joined the team, which finished atop the East Division with forwards Caroline Ouellette and France St-Louis contributing offensively; Julie Healy served as coach that season.

In 2003 the team was renamed the Montreal Axion. For the 2004–05 season, new players included Gina Kingsbury, Angela Ruggiero, Jenny Lavigne and Annie Desrosiers, and Charline Labonté replaced Rhéaume in goal. The Axion finished third in the league and reached the final, losing 5–4 to the Toronto Aeros. That season the Axion also represented Quebec at the 2005 Esso Women's Nationals. The 2005–06 season saw the Axion finish second in their division behind the Ottawa Raiders, then defeat the Brampton Thunder 1–0 in the championship game before 6,000 spectators in Brampton, Ontario; Lisa-Marie Breton scored the winning goal and Charline Labonté recorded the shutout. In 2006–07, the Axion placed fifth in the regular season but won the East Division playoffs, only to lose the NWHL final 4–0 to the Brampton Thunder. Shortly after, the NWHL ceased operations.
