The Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves joined the Alberta Junior Hockey League as an expansion franchise in 1998, bringing Junior 'A' hockey back to the Crowsnest Pass region after a 22-year gap following the demise of The Pass Red Devils. The team played its home games at the Coleman Complex in Coleman, a community within the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass. Despite representing a small, rural area, the Timberwolves managed to field competitive teams that produced three future NHL players: Jeremy Colliton, Rick Rypien, and Devin Setoguchi.

Over their six seasons, the Timberwolves reached the playoffs four times but never advanced beyond the quarter-finals. Their only playoff series win came in 2001, when they defeated the Bow Valley Eagles three games to two in the quarter-final before being swept by the Olds Grizzlys four games to none. In their other three playoff appearances—2002, 2003, and 2004—they lost in the preliminary round, each time being swept or losing in four games.

The franchise struggled to sustain itself in the small market of Crowsnest Pass. After the 2003–04 season, the team took a leave of absence for the 2004–05 season and subsequently relocated to Okotoks, Alberta, where it was rebranded as the Okotoks Oilers.
