The Drumheller Falcons entered the AJHL in 1971–72 after acquiring the assets of the defunct Ponoka Stampeders. Their most successful campaign came in 1974–75, when they finished second overall in the regular season and battled through the playoffs to reach the AJHL finals. There they pushed the Spruce Grove Mets to a full seven games before losing the championship; the Mets would go on to win the Centennial Cup that year without any other challenger taking them to a seven-game series. The Falcons struggled with attendance the following season and subsequently took a three-year leave of absence from the league.

The Falcons returned in 1979 but were consistently overmatched, winning only 29 games total between 1979 and 1983. The team folded midway through the 1982–83 season having lost every game they played that year, finishing with a record of 0–24–0 (with two additional games forfeited after the team's demise). Their 35-game losing streak spanning two seasons remains an AJHL record, stopped only by the franchise's dissolution.

Four Falcons alumni went on to play in the National Hockey League: Merlin Malinowski, Jim Nill, Bryan Maxwell, and John Hilworth. Drumheller would not receive another AJHL team until 2003, when the Drumheller Dragons were founded as an expansion franchise.
