The franchise began in 1998 as the Brampton Thunder in the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League (COWHL), after acting mayor Sue Fennell purchased a franchise following discussions with local athlete Cassie Campbell. The team played at the Brampton Centre for Sports & Entertainment (later Powerade Centre). In 1999, Fennell helped transform the COWHL into the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), and the Thunder won the first NWHL Championship Cup in 1998–99. The Thunder also won the final NWHL Cup in 2006–07 and appeared in three other finals. The team contributed five players to the 2006 Winter Olympics, including three Canadians who won gold. When the NWHL suspended operations in 2007, the Brampton Thunder players joined a new CWHL franchise called the Brampton Canadettes-Thunder. In 2011, the Thunder played an exhibition game in Kingston, Ontario, where captain Jayna Hefford's number 15 was raised to the rafters. The team relocated to Markham before the 2017–18 season, becoming the Markham Thunder, and won the 2018 Clarkson Cup in overtime against Kunlun Red Star.
