Doom Patrol
The world's strangest heroes: misfits bound by tragedy.
The Doom Patrol is a DC Comics team of super-powered misfits whose abilities left them traumatized and shunned. Writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney and artist Bruno Premiani created the team, which first appeared in My Greatest Adventure #80 (June 1963); the title was renamed Doom Patrol with issue #86. Editor Murray Boltinoff dubbed them the "world's strangest heroes". The original lineup was the Chief (Niles Caulder), Robotman (Cliff Steele), Elasti-Girl (Rita Farr) and Negative Man (Larry Trainor), soon joined by Beast Boy and Mento. Drake killed the team off in issue #121 (1968). A later run by Grant Morrison, beginning with issue #19 of the second volume, turned the book surreal, took on mental health and identity, and moved it to the Vertigo line. Drake suspected that Marvel's X-Men, launched months after his team, borrowed the concept.
