Lore & Background
Fnatic was the winner of the event after defeating Team EnVyUs 2–0. Fnatic was the first team to have consecutive major titles and would be the only team to do so until SK Gaming (which was Luminosity Gaming at this tournament) when the Brazilian team won MLG Columbus 2016 and ESL One Cologne 2016.
In Their Own Story
The air in the Lanxess Arena tasted of cold energy drinks and warm anticipation. Behind the glass partition, karrigan ran a finger along the edge of his mousepad, feeling the faint groove from a thousand hours of flicks. The crowd beyond the glass was a single breathing organism — ten thousand voices humming at a frequency just below hearing. Device was already in his chair, headphones on, eyes half-closed, running the next round in his head like a film reel. The map loaded. The buy phase began. And for the next forty-five minutes, the only thing that existed was the geometry of the map, the sound of footsteps on concrete, and the quiet certainty of five men who had rehearsed this exact moment until it felt like memory rather than prediction. The arena roared. The crosshair found its mark. Another round, another name in the kill feed, another step toward the trophy that would sit on a shelf in a Copenhagen apartment for the rest of the year.
Reader's Guide
The top eight teams from ESL One Katowice 2015 ("Legends") received direct invitations to Katowice. In addition, eight other teams (the "Challengers") emerged from offline qualifiers: four from the European qualifier, two from the Asian qualifier, and two from the North American qualifier. Teams were split into four groups, all group matches were best-of-ones. The playoffs bracket consisted of eight teams, two from each group. All playoff matches were best-of-three, single elimination. There were seven maps in the pool; Nuke was removed and Train was brought back. In the group stage, both teams banned two maps, then the map was randomly selected from the remaining three. In the playoffs, each team banned one map, then chose one map; the two chosen maps were the first two maps of the best-of-three; if a third map was needed, it was randomly selected from the three remaining maps.
