History

Joe Flizzow, previously signed to EMI Malaysia as a member of the hip-hop duo Too Phat, established Kartel Records in 2005 to control his music career. The label's first release was Too Phat's Rebirth Into Reality, a joint venture with EMI Malaysia. That album won Best Local English Album and Best Album Cover at the 2006 Anugerah Industri Muzik. In 2008, Kartel Records issued President, Joe Flizzow's debut solo studio album, which earned the Best Local English Album award at the 16th Anugerah Industri Muzik. The album featured collaborations with artists such as KRS-One, Jin, Thaitanium, TerryTyeLee, and Hady Mirza, aligning with the label's goal of elevating Malaysian hip-hop internationally. In 2009, Kartel Records signed five new artists: Altimet, SonaOne, Richard J, Micbandits, and DJ Iman. The signing of Altimet, a prominent figure in Malaysia's hip-hop scene, was seen as a strategic move to strengthen the label's position as a fast-growing Asian hip-hop label.
