The gull cried again, dragging its beak across the rusted hull of the old trawler. Conker leaned on the railing, a half-empty bottle of something amber swinging from his paw, and watched the fog roll in off the water. Somewhere past the breakwater, the gold was waiting. Somewhere past the breakwater, so was the trouble. He took a swig, spat a little over the edge, and muttered, "Right then," to no one in particular. The dock creaked. The crates shifted. And Conker, because he was Conker, started running.
