In Their Own Story

The first thing Conker notices is the taste of copper on his tongue. The second thing is that he cannot see his own tail. The third thing is the sound of water dripping somewhere to the left, keeping a slow, mocking rhythm in the dark. He spits. He swears. He tries to stand and immediately regrets it.

The tunnel ahead is maybe four feet wide. The wooden beams overhead are black with age, and one of them is cracked, hanging by a single nail. Conker pushes forward, his paws scraping on wet stone. Somewhere behind him, something shifts — a rock, a root, a sound that might be a rat or might be something with more teeth than a rat. He does not turn around. He does not have the time, and he certainly does not have the patience.

At the end of the passage, a sliver of grey light. Not sunlight. Not yet. But enough to see that the way out is not a door. It is a gap, a crack in the world, and Conker squeezes through it like a man who has been told the world is not finished with him yet.
