Teddy Bear

The classic stuffed toy named after President Theodore Roosevelt.

Teddy Bear

A teddy bear, or simply a teddy, is a stuffed toy in the form of a bear. The teddy bear was named by Morris Michtom after the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt; it was developed apparently simultaneously in the first decade of the 20th century by two toymakers: Richard Steiff in Germany and Michtom in the United States. It became a popular children's toy, and it has been celebrated in story, song, and film.

Lore & Background

The name teddy bear comes from Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, who was often referred to as 'Teddy' (a nickname he loathed). The name originated from an incident on a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902. Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree, deeming it unsportsmanlike, and the incident became the topic of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman. Morris Michtom saw the drawing and created a small soft bear cub, placing it in his candy-shop window with a sign reading 'Teddy's bear'. The toys were an immediate success. Around the same time in Germany, the Steiff firm produced a stuffed bear from Richard Steiff's designs, exhibited at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903. Neither creator would have known of the other's work due to poor transatlantic communication.

In Their Own Story

The air in the mansion's library was thick with dust and the faint smell of decay. Conker, a squirrel with more bravado than sense, pried open a creaking chest. Inside, nestled on a bed of moth-eaten velvet, lay a teddy bear. Its button eyes stared up at him, its stitched smile frozen in place. Conker picked it up, feeling its worn fur. 'A teddy bear? In a place like this?' he muttered. The bear felt heavy, not with stuffing, but with a purpose he didn't yet understand. Somewhere in the dark, a ghostly wail echoed — and Conker knew this toy was the key to quieting it.
