Lore & Background

The term 'repeater' originated with telegraphy in the 19th century, referring to an electromechanical device (a relay) used to regenerate telegraph signals. Use of the term has continued in telephony and data communications.

In Their Own Story

The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder and cheap cologne. Conker ducked behind a stack of crates as a hail of bullets chewed through the wood inches from his head. 'Bloody hell!' he muttered, peeking out to see a Tediz soldier reloading. The soldier's Repeater clattered to the ground as Conker lunged, grabbing the hot barrel. 'Your turn, you fluffy git!' he shouted, squeezing the trigger. The weapon bucked in his hands, spitting lead in a wild arc. The Tediz danced and fell, and Conker grinned, the Repeater's roar drowning out the screams of the battlefield.

Reader's Guide

In computer networking, repeaters work with the actual physical signal and do not interpret the data being transmitted; they operate on the physical layer (first layer of the OSI model). A multiport Ethernet repeater is usually called a hub.
