In Their Own Story

The corridor was dark and smelled of wet fur and cordite. Conker's belt was empty, his flask was empty, and the thing at the end of the hall was not empty – it was a three-foot-tall badger with a knife and a grudge. He raised his right fist. The arm went out in a wide, wobbly arc, more swing than strike, and connected with a wet thud that echoed off the concrete. The badger staggered. Conker did not follow up. He never did. He just stood there, chest heaving, a thin line of blood on his knuckle, and muttered something about 'not my shift.' Then he turned and limped back the way he came, tail dragging, already forgetting the badger's face.
