A Touch of Class (group)
International Eurodance group formed by Cats cast members.
ATC, short for A Touch of Class, was a Eurodance group based in Germany that formed in 1999. Their biggest hit came in 2000 with "Around the World (La La La La La)", a song that topped the German charts for six weeks and also charted in the US and UK. The group split up at the end of 2003.
The four original members came from different countries: Joseph "Joey" Murray (New Zealand), Sarah Egglestone (Australia), Livio Salvi (Italy), and Tracey Elizabeth Packham (England). They met in Hamburg while performing in a German production of the musical *Cats* from October 1997 to April 1998—Egglestone played Bombalurina, Salvi played Mungojerrie, Packham played Syllabub, and Murray played Munkustrap and worked as a swing dancer. The four became friends and decided to form a dance group. Egglestone recalled watching TV and thinking, "there's no reason [...] why we can't do this." In 1999, they met producers Alex Christensen and Thomas M. Stein and began working under the name ATC. The group blended male and female vocals, with Murray noting that producers often avoid mixing voices, which gave them an edge.
Their debut single, "Around the World (La La La La La)"—an English cover of "Pesenka" by the Russian group Ruki Vverh!—came out on 1 April 2000. It hit number one in Germany for six weeks in summer 2000, peaked at number 28 in the US, and number 15 in the UK. Their debut album *Planet Pop*, with songs by Christensen and Clyde Ward, was released on 6 February 2001 by King Size (BMG Entertainment) and Republic (Universal Music), earning them an ECHO award for Best Dance Act. The 2001 single "I'm in Heaven (When You Kiss Me)" did moderately well in parts of Europe, but the 2002 single "Set Me Free" was unsuccessful. In 2003, German DJ and producer ATB won a court case against the band's label, but the group continued as ATC until disbanding. They released the single "New York City" and a second album, *Touch the Sky*, in 2004, but neither matched earlier success, and the group disbanded as members went separate ways.
After the split, Egglestone runs a pilates studio in Australia, and Packham works as a carer. Murray and Salvi formed a cover band, Démodé Trio, with Yvette Robinson in 2016. In 2019, Dutch-Moroccan DJ R3hab remade "All Around the World (La La La)", crediting ATC and collaborating with the group.
